RESISTANCE AT TULE LAKE Released for Educational Distribution

By August 8, 2018 No Comments

Resistance at Tule Lake is now available to educational institutions. Third World Newsreel (TWN) offers our film through streaming on twn.tugg.com, and institutional purchase and rental on twn.org. We have developed a comprehensive curriculum guide for high school and college use of the film.

“Konrad Aderer’s magnificent Resistance at Tule Lake tells a history that has long needed to be told, about the US government’s foolish and panicked mistakes in dealing with those already incarcerated.”
– International Documentary Association Magazine

From TWN’s press release:

Japanese American filmmaker Konrad Aderer previously directed the award-winning feature documentary Enemy Alien, which intertwined his family’s WWII legacy with the dramatic story of the fight to free a Palestinian detainee arrested in a sweep of Muslim immigrants following 9/11.

“My grandparents were incarcerated during WWII and I was always interested in the flip side. Did anyone protest or resist? And that was an unsettled question for a long time because a lot of resistance was not talked about in the Japanese American community,” Konrad says. “When I was making my first film Enemy Alien, I was looking for a parallel in Japanese American history. I found it in Tule Lake.”

‘Taboo topics’ of Resistance offer lessons for all

“We are pleased to release Resistance at Tule Lake for educational distribution”, says JT Takagi, Executive Director of Third World Newsreel and Consulting Producer of this film. “This new film by Konrad Aderer shows how thousands of Japanese Americans fought against their unjustified imprisonment by the U.S. government and paid a grievous price. In this current climate of fear, racism, xenophobia and national security, the internment episode has implications for all to consider.”

“The film gives ample screen time to several of the most taboo topics within camp history: that of draft resistance, renunciation, sequestration within camp (at the infamous ‘stockade’ and ‘bullpen’), the nationalist Hoshi Dan group, and physical torture.”
